An independent beginning
Patrick founded The Ancient Web in 1998 as an outlet for his interests in art, archaeology, and the history and culture of ancient civilizations. It developed into an educational publishing venture with original writing, curated articles, contributing authors, and an accompanying commerce business, the Ancient WebStore.
Connecting content, audience, and commerce
The project brought together a content-management platform, a responsive visual design, and marketing automation. Relevant editorial content helped readers discover the publication, register for its features, and explore products in the webstore. As the publication developed, it became a collaboration with other authors contributing their own work.
Building the venture meant connecting the experience of reading and learning with the practical work of audience development and commerce. It gave Patrick firsthand experience of developing an independent idea into a publishing platform and a related store.
Historical reach
Patrick’s original portfolio reported an active registered audience and an average of more than 100,000 new visitors per month at the time of that account. That is a historical, self-reported audience figure; it is not a current traffic measure.
A completed chapter
The Ancient Web is no longer live. This case study preserves the work and the entrepreneurial experience behind it. The images show the publication and store as they appeared during the venture.
